Testing a Theory

I didn't have a chance to post anything today, but I have a theory about blogs, which is that quality is not always better than quantity -- more specifically, it's better for there to be some kind of content regularly even if not every post is really great. Those who follow blogs tend to check in daily, or at least close to that, and finding nothing new is a sure fire way to discourage them from checking back again. Obviously, the overall value of the writing has to be worthy, but I think it's better to have SOMETHING than nothing, all else being equal, if you want people to keep coming back.

So, am I right, in your opinion -- are you glad to have found this filler content rather than nothing? Does it make you more likely to check back soon in case there is something worthwhile?

Well Nate, if you had an RSS feed, it wouldn't matter how regularly you posted. You could keep the quality where it is, and not worry about losing readers.

I think you are 100% right, although that might be mostly true for the 'formative' time when developing your audience, and when your audience is primarily freinds and associates. As a blog's audience grows I think quality becomes increasingly important (as well as continued frequency). For example I go to TPM everyday for political commentary but I have long since abandoned the other regular blogs covering simialr issues, because they just weren't good enough.

I definitely agree. You'll lose readers and you'll lose momentum yourself if you don't write something regularly. I think Kelly is right as well. Quality is obviously important, but you can probably keep readers going between quality posts if you have some continuing content in the interim. Just make sure there is quality content on a somewhat regular basis. But what do I know!

Shane beat me to it. An RSS feed takes care of that problem.

But, without RSS, I think you are absolutely right.

Yeah, yeah, yeah -- I know, my blog is running on sub-par technology that is way behind the times.
